Leoncio Bueno, one of Peru's most prominent social and proletarian poets, died on 31 July 2026 at 106 years old. Born in 1920 in La Libertad, Bueno's life was marked by manual labor, prison cells, and a commitment to the working class. His first poems were published in 1943 and he founded the Grupo Obrero Marxista in 1944. His political activism resulted in harsh repression and he was sentenced in 1952 to five years in prison for instigating against the Odría government. His major works include "Al pie del yunque" (1966), "Pastor de truenos" (1968), "Rebuzno propio" (1976), and "La guerra de los runas" (1980). He received the Premio Casa de la Literatura Peruana in 2016 and was honored with Peru’s Orden de los Grandes Maestros de la Cultura Peruana, one the country’�s highest cultural distinctions.
