Consumer Reports has named five popular electric vehicles with the best real-world range, according to a study by the organization. The study found that many vehicles perform worse on the highway than their advertised EPA ranges, but many vehicles overperform EPA estimates, giving owners an extra 10 or 20 miles beyond the expected range. The discrepancy was caused by the EPA's labelling of highway and city driving, which differs from Consumer Reports' real-life range. Consumer Reports calls the EPA’s miles-per-gallon-equivalent calculations “outdated” and its methods unrealistic. The organization was founded in 1936 by former employees of Consumers’ Research.
