North America’s Largest Wildlife Overpass Opens for Animals to Safely Cross in Colorado
Published on March 28, 2026.
The Colorado Department of Transportation has completed the construction of North America's largest wildlife overpass, the Greenland overpass. The structure was completed in less than a year, ahead of schedule and on budget, connecting 39,000 acres of habitat on both sides of the 6-lane highway between Larkspur and Monument. It is expected to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes by 90% and provide safe passage for elk and pronghorn. The project was funded by a multi-agency public-private partnership, including the Federal Highway Administration, and a federal grant award called the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program.
