A report by credit bureau Experian has revealed that Americans are borrowing more than ever before, with a shift in how they manage their money. The study tracks personal loan usage across every state, metro area, and borrower segment in the country. Over one in three consumers now carry at least one personal loan on their credit report, a 7% increase from the previous year. Total personal loans on consumer credit reports have also increased by over 30 million, with total unsecured personal loan balances reaching $207.1 billion. The Federal Reserve ended 2025 with a record $1.28 trillion in credit card debt, with interest rates remaining near historic highs. The report also revealed that a survey of 1,005 consumers found that current economic conditions make them more likely to borrow a personal loan.
