The Kentucky Derby, the most unpredictable event in sports, is set to take place on Saturday. The first time I covered the Derby for Sports Illustrated was in 2002, when War Emblem won, a small-boned speedball who had been sold for $900,000 by Saudi Arabian Prince Ahmed bin Salman. The Derby has been contested almost annually since the end of the Civil War and will be attended by roughly 150,000 fans on the first Saturday in May. However, the race's unpredictability is due to its focus on three-year-olds, which are often likened by racing insiders to human teenagers. The winner of the Derby can be a horse that came into maturity only weeks before the race. This year's winner will be So Happy Att, a controversial billionaire owner in addition to controversial billionaire Mike Repole, who has heard his own voice in the sport’s hallways.
