North Korea denounces ‘muscle-flexing’ US-South Korean military exercises

North Korea's Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has criticised the US and South Korea for starting their annual 'Freedom Shield' exercises. She warned that the exercises could lead to 'unimaginably terrible consequences' as they involve 18,000 South Korean and US military personnel. This comes as the two countries begin their 10-day joint military exercises on the Korean Peninsula. The Freedom Shield will involve 22 field training drills, fewer than half the number carried out last year. Kim Yo Yong criticised the exercises, stating they have no justification for them, citing the recent global geopolitical crisis and international events as proof that they assume no distinction between defence and attack.
