The new Dietary Guidelines by the Trump administration have been praised for their approach to responsible drinking, which includes a science-based approach to the issue of alcohol consumption. The previous guidelines had been the standard of two drinks for men, one for women, and not a drop more. The new guidance, issued in January by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, urges people to drink responsibly. The guidelines acknowledge overconsumption of alcohol, but also acknowledge that it can lead to drunk driving, addiction, and damaged health. The data supports this common-sense approach, including studies showing that moderate drinking can have some benefits and that red wine or champagne contains polyphenols that may help with vascular function. However, there is also some evidence that light drinking can do a little good, with studies suggesting that regular moderate drinkers who also eat well, exercise, and don't smoke enjoy better outcomes than those who abstain.
