Southern University players are playing against Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks in the first round of the Women's NCAA Tournament. The No. 16 seed is one of two HBCUs to make the Women’s NCAA Tournament this year, a feat the Jaguars have achieved in consecutive seasons. Staley regularly schedules games with HBCU to promote their programs. Southern sophomore forward DeMya Porter expressed admiration for Staley, who has done a lot of things for the South South Carolina program and younger players looking up to her. This will be the second time Southern player will meet Staley on a college court.
