A new documentary by Star Trek Online has revealed the true origin of Starfleet, which was formed in 2161 and since then, has been known as the spacefaring armada of the Federation. The documentary, which also explains four different Star Trek-themed starships, suggests that the first Starfleet existed before the first starship with a warp 5 engine was launched. It also reveals that an early form of Starfleet was created to defend civilian Earth ships from alien pirates. The doc also reveals the origin of the interstellar officer corps, which evolved into a professional group of professional space cadre. This period of Star Trek prehistory has not been explored in the various TV series.
