Wayne Perkins, Guitarist Who Nearly Joined the Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Dead at 74

Wayne Perkins, a journeyman guitarist who played on records by Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley, and the Wailers, has died at 74 after suffering a stroke. Perkins nearly became a rock icon in 1975 when Eric Clapton recommended him to the Rolling Stones as a replacement for Mick Taylor. He also overdubbed a slide guitar part on “Fool to Cry” and was part of the core group that recorded “Memory Motel’s and “Hand of Fate” before the track was released in 1981. Despite being offered a job in Lynyrd Skynyrd a year later, Perkins declined.
