OK governor's race should focus on our issues, not Trump

Despite his status as a lame duck, there are indications that Donald Trump will play a significant role in the 2026 election in Oklahoma. His endorsement of Kevin Hern for the U.S. Senate and his endorsement of T.W. Shannon for lieutenant governor have caused his closest opponent, state Auditor Cindy Byrd, to run for state treasurer instead. Four of the top five Republican candidates for governor argued over who should be considered the "Trumpiest" of them all at a forum held by Oklahoma's Freedom Caucus. They maintained the Trump positions on various issues, particularly his aggressive efforts to deport millions of immigrants in the country illegally. However, there was little discussion of how to help Oklahomans cope with issues such as poverty, poor schools, federal budget cuts, the soaring cost of health care, home and auto insurance, tariffs and inflation. The Oklahoman's editorial board urges voters to focus on these issues rather than party conformity and personalities.
