The mayor of Hoboken, Michael Jabbour, has announced a hiring freeze ahead of a vote to introduce the next budget for 2025-2026, which includes a 20% tax hike. He stated that no new positions will be hired in City Hall and that this will save as much as $600,000, bringing the budget gap down to $13 million. The freeze is part of a larger effort to reduce the budget deficit from $17 million to $14 million. However, Second Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, who was a frequent critic of Jabbour's predecessor, referred to these comments as "selective math," claiming they compare current costs to those in a previous year when the budget was under a state monitor. The next budget will cover the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
