The historic Parkway Theatre in Baltimore, one of the country's first "movie palaces," is undergoing a renaissance. The Maryland Film Festival acquired the building from the City of Baltimore and it reopened in 2017 as the SNF Parkway Theatre. The board of directors has approved a vision to transform the theater into a hub of cultural innovation for the Baltimore community. Executive Director Nancy Proctor, who was chosen from a national search of 100 candidates, is leading the project. The SNF Park Theatre will be year-round home of the Maryland Film festival. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and renovations began in 2012. Additional upgrades include replacing the fixed screen with a retractable one and installing an additional sound system that can be used for live performances. The theater is also expanding beyond its programming of independent and classic movies, events and musical performances.
