Costa Mesa resident Julian Hernandez was bitten by a rattlesnake while biking on the OC Trail on Feb. 1, causing him to fall into a coma and remain in an intensive care unit. His family has raised around $19,000 through a GoFundMe to investigate the cause of death. The CDC estimates that about five people per year die annually from venomous snakebites.
