The Minnesota House has voted along party lines on a bill to fund school security measures in response to the Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minneapolis. The bill, HF 3493, would provide a net budget impact of $52 million annually for measures such as more security and mental health services in schools. The funds would be used for public, non-public, charter, and tribal schools. However, Democrats on the House Education Finance Committee voted against the bill, citing several concerns about rerouting aid for student support personnel and a rule allowing schools to suspend kids for up to three days who have posed threats. This comes ahead of a crucial April 17 deadline for lawmakers to advance budget bills out of committee in their chamber of origin. So far, Republican support for an assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazine ban has not moved on, despite efforts by House Democrats to advance these measures.
