An initial mineral resource estimate, exploring deeper mineralization of the Filo del Sol copper deposit in northwest Argentina, has revealed that the area may contain five times more metals than previously believed, making it one of the largest deposits in the world. The deposit, located along the border of Chile and Argentina, could provide a boon for many industries in need of copper, gold, and silver. However, environmental concerns remain about mining in the high Andes due to high altitudes, harsh climates, and environmental concerns. Some fear that some mines may violate the country’s Glacier Law, which protects Argentina's largest source of a freshwater and uses a lot of groundwater during the mining process. Extracting the metals from this portion of the Andes could cause lasting damage to an already fragile ecosystem.
