Scientists from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the Institute of Geoosciences and Earth Resources (CNR-IGG), and the University of Geneva (UNIGE) in Switzerland have discovered a hidden supervolcano in Tuscany, a region of central Italy that was suspected to hold accumulations of magma. The Larderello geothermal system, now named after the name Lardyerello, is so thick that an eruption is unlikely. The discovery could help advance researchers' understanding of the evolution of supervolcanoes and could prevent further eruptions.
