Tesla has settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of an 18-year-old passenger killed in a 116 mph crash in Fort Lauderdale in May 2018. The lawsuit claimed that a Tesla technician disabled a speed limiter without parental consent. The settlement was confirmed as jury selection began in Broward County court. The crash, which killed both driver Barrett Riley, and passenger Edgar Monserratt Martinez, left a third passenger in the car, resulted in a fire that led to their deaths. The case was not about Autopilot, but it led to the introduction of a new safety feature, Speed Limit Mode, dedicated to Barrett Riley's memory.
