Sandy Alcantara, the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner, was pulled from a game against the Reds in which he hadn't allowed a single run this season and was two outs away from his second consecutive shutout. However, a double from Matt McCalin and a walk to Elly De La Cruz put two Reds runners on base, leading to Miami's decision to bring in reliever Anthony Bender, who blew the lead. The game ended in a 6-3 loss to the Reds, leading the Marlins to 6-0. Alcantarar, who had been out of the game due to a high pitch count and a right-handed hitter coming up, expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to pull him from the game. He said he felt he could have stayed in for at least another batter.
