A new analysis has revealed that hospitals are billing health plans for more complex care than they provide, according to Blue Health Intelligence (BHI). The study found that nearly 60% of inpatient admissions that could be coded as complex were done at these facilities by the end of March 2025, up from 47% in April 2022. The remaining 90% of hospitals saw a 4-percent increase in complex cases over the same period. This shift coincides with an increase in hospital use of AI to document patient visits. The American Hospital Association noted that this shift is partly due to less intense care moving to outpatient and office settings.
