Waymo has issued a voluntary recall affecting thousands of autonomous vehicles in Nashville following the company's response to flooded roadways. The recall involves the fifth- and sixth-generation automated driving systems in over 3,700 autonomous vehicles. The voluntary recall was issued following an incident in which a Waymo vehicle entered a flooded San Antonio roadway and kept moving through water before engineers identified the defect. Despite the voluntary recall, there have been no disruptions to Waymo's vehicles or service in Nashville. The company has identified an area of improvement regarding untraversable flooded lanes specific to higher-speed roadways and is working to implement additional software safeguards and implement mitigations.
