Wisconsin's Republican Party has been hit hard by a 20-point defeat in the race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, a historic low point for the GOP in a swing state like Wisconsin. The defeat, which followed a national record for total spending on a state supreme court race of $115 million, was blamed on state Republican Party chair Brian Schimming and his inability to raise enough campaign cash for conservative candidate Maria Lazar. The change in campaign funding rules, which allowed unlimited donations, has also impacted the fundraising success of Democratic Party leader Ben Wikler, who raised more money than Republicans.
