Wisconsin's Republican Party has been hit hard by a 20-point defeat in the race for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, a historic low point for the GOP in a swing state like Wisconsin. The defeat, which followed a national record for total spending on a state supreme court race of $115 million, was blamed on state Republican Party chair Brian Schimming and his inability to raise enough campaign cash for conservative candidate Maria Lazar. The change in campaign funding rules, which allowed unlimited donations, has also impacted the fundraising success of Democratic Party leader Ben Wikler, who raised more money than Republicans. Despite this, the GOP has been unable to win in Wisconsin, despite creating a game they believe they can't win even though they created. The Democratic Party raised $27 million in 2018 compared to $8 million in 2020, but by 2023, the Democratic Party had raised $16.14 million, four times more than the state Republican party.
