NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, Artemis 2 commander, broke NASA protocol to save the mission's moon mascot, Rise, named by Lucas Ye, a mini-moon created by Wiseman and Lucas Ye. The plushie moon toy, which became a symbol during the historic lunar flyby mission, was kept in Wiseman's spacecraft after it splashed down on April 10, 2026. Despite being supposed to leave Rise in the spacecraft Integrity, Wiseman decided not to do so. He removed Rise from the spacecraft and placed it in a dry bag in a survival kit and attached it to his pressure suit. Rise, along with the crew, was then transported to the USS John P. Murtha off the coast of California. The toy also became a popular symbol during this mission, with crew members often playing with it during livestreamed conversations with Earth and taking over NASA's social media streams mid-mission.
