Sizzle then Drizzle: Record Heat this Weekend, Showers possible Tuesday night
Published on March 29, 2026.
The California Valley experienced record-breaking temperatures over the weekend, with Merced, Visalia, Fresno, Madera, and Hanford each seeing record highs of 87 and 89 respectively. However, changes are on the way, with temperatures expected to remain warm, dry, and potentially wetter by Tuesday. Showers are possible in the Valley by Tuesday, and there is a slight chance of a thunderstorm. This is expected to be the first storm in over a month in over the past month. Despite this, California experienced only 105% of normal rainfall in 2015–16, compared to 167% of average rainfall in 1997–98 and 177% in 1982–83. Long-range models are predicting an El Niño pattern, possibly a strong one, which is predicted to develop next winter. The potential El Niño is seen as a seasonal reversal of the Trade Winds that move westward along the equator towards South America, which can help "supercharge" rainfall and heavy rainfall to parts of the Pacific.
