Election 2026: North Carolina picks candidates for pivotal U.S. Senate race

North Carolina voters are choosing candidates for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Thom Tillis. The November general election could be seen as a referendum on Republican President Donald Trump's second term. Tillis, who served two terms in the Senate, was often at odds with Trump and other Republicans on certain issues, including voting against the "One Big Big Beautiful Bill Act" over concerns about health care in the state. The race for the seat is expected to be one of the most expensive in the nation. Former North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is considered the frontrunner in his party's race, with five other Democratic candidates.
