U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, a Miami-Dade Republican and part of a Cuban-American political family, could potentially represent a large swath of southwest Broward County after this year's elections. This is part of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' successful effort to redistrict the state's congressional districts in a way to elect four more Republicans and four fewer Democrats from Florida. The new map, ratified by the Republican-controlled Legislature, moves Republican voters into what had been Democratic districts. The net effect is to give Florida 24 Republican districts and four Democratic districts, giving the state 24 Republican and eight Democratic districts currently. The changes have been seen as a welcome development for Diana Taub, president of the Southwest Broward Republican Organization, who believes the redistricting will address population growth.
