New York City parents are complaining about the number of public school holidays, which they believe are too excessive. Students are currently only in school for 176 days a year, with an especially long spring recess period. This is due to New York state law requiring students to stay at school for 180 days, and students lose teachers to four “professional development days”, which the state considers an exception to this rule, along with two half-days for parent-teacher conferences. This year, students lost a day due to the February blizzard, which will not be made up due to a state waiver from the state. Some parents are venting on Reddit, with one user suggesting working from their homes while their children are off from school.
