A wildfire threatened Berkeley in 1926, starting on the night of July 15-16, 1926, threatening to burn nearly 25 acres of land in Strawberry Canyon. The fire was extinguished after several hours of intense firefighting efforts by hundreds of students, including hundreds of Fire Department companies and hundreds of student volunteers. The flames threatened university buildings, residences, and the California Memorial Stadium. The fires occurred during a heat wave that brought increased forest fire hazard. At the same time as the Berkeley fire started, a similar blaze erupted near Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, threatening a radio station near Bolinas. The Berkeley Daily Gazette reported that a rare double shooting occurred on July 21, 1926. The city also saw a traffic campaign against violators of the boulevard stop ordinance, raising the fine for violating a stop sign from $2 to $5.
