The 98th Academy Awards saw notable wins for Ryan Coogler's film, "Sinners," which already had a record-breaking 16 nominations, including for best picture, the most in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in nearly 100 years. The film, set in the 1930s, won in four categories, including best actor for Michael B. Jordan, with Jordan expressing gratitude to everyone who believed in Cooglers' vision. Coogher's director of photography, Autumn Durald Arkapaw, also made history as the first woman to ever win the Oscar for best cinematography. Despite not winning the Oscar, Cooggler received the award for best original screenplay, becoming the second Black writer to be so honored. Fans in the Bay Area praised the film for its elevated narratives about Black culture.
