A West Texas revolt is erasing hundreds of miles of President Trump's planned border wall in the Big Bend sector, which includes 517 miles of the southern border along the Rio Grande. The opposition is primarily against the physical steel wall, not border security. Most of the sector's mileage (minus canyon sections) was slated for physical barrier construction in February, but has since been reduced to roughly 175 miles. The coalition's grievances include degradation to vulnerable watersheds and archeological sites, disruption of animal migrations, and damage to private property values. Five border county sheriffs have urged federal officials to consider a "technology-driven, and terrain-informed" solution. However, as of mid-February, only 35.9 miles of new border wall construction have been finished across the southern Border.
