Malaysia's hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup are over after the Asian Football Confederation penalised the country for fielding ineligible players in earlier victories over Nepal and Vietnam. The sanctions were announced following a verdict by the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) using falsified documents to obtain passports for seven players. The CAS partially upheld the original FIFA sanctions imposed on FAM and the players, stating that the 12-month ban from playing matches was a reasonable and proportionate punishment given their involvement in the fraud. This means that their 2-0 and 4-0 victories over Vietnam and Nepal respectively have been overturned.
