The US’ federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), began accelerating in 2025 but was held back by unnecessary federal roadblocks. NEVI allocated $5 billion to help states build out electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country, with an additional $2.5 billion allocated by the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) program. The Sierra Club report suggests that while EV infrastructure is already good for long trips, there is a gap in coverage that could be widened as more and more EVs hit the road. The report also highlights efforts by states with climate goals, while states with less interest in climate progress have done little access to funds. The Department of Transportation (DoT) has been attempting to halt disbursement of funds, but states and nonprofits have won a court case against this.
