Michigan's risky Palisades reactor restart is behind schedule

Holtec International, a New Jersey-based company, is attempting to reopen the Palisades reactor, a nuclear plant permanently closed for decommissioning. The project, which has been delayed for 21 months, involves delays and delays, including unpermitted welding on a noncompliant reactor. Holtec is seeking an exemption from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for this work. The NRC's review of the reactor is expected to take several months and could take several more. This uncertainty could threaten financing of the entire atomic energy industry and potentially impact plans for two more Holtec nuclear plants at the site. The cost of the restart could exceed $16 billion.
