The sword-and-sorcery fantasy action film Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert, has been hailed as the best of the 1980s by screenwriter Gregory Widen. The film, which spawned two direct sequels and two TV series, is about to be rebooted by director Russell Mulcahy and has been viewed as one of the best films of the decade. Widen was a college student at UCLA when he wrote the first draft of Highlander, which was partially inspired by Ridley Scott's 1977 film The Duelists. Highlander's story follows the story of an immortal Scotsman who must battle others like him to the death until one of them leaves.
