The legend of rogue waves has existed for centuries, with stories of these powerful waves appearing out of nowhere. However, in 1995, an 80-foot tidal wave was the first ever recorded in an open ocean. Satellite data has been used to study these waves since 2001, and several studies have been conducted to better understand their formation. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SEA) has also revealed that these waves can occur hundreds or thousands of miles away from powerful storms.
