The number of Americans living outside the United States has fluctuated from citizenship to country of birth, with some countries reporting citizenship, while others listing immigrant-status totals that do not match "U.S. passport holders". Mexico leads the list with Mexico by sheer scale and proximity, with Mexican towns offering services like American-run clubs, bilingual services, and expat Facebook groups. The UK remains a popular destination due to its English-speaking communities and language, culture, universities, and global careers. The number of people born in the US rose to about 203,000 in 2021, up from about 177,000 from 177,00 in 2011, according to England and Wales' Census 2021 bulletin. Spain has seen a shift from "vacation dream" to "real-life option" for a growing slice of Americans, with Madrid leading for jobs and logistics, while Madrid and southern cities winning on weather and lifestyle differences. Australia's population is also a significant draw due to slow travel distances and a quality-of-life experience.
