State senator says wrongful conviction settlements fall short of law’s intent

Hawaii taxpayers will fund over $1 million in payouts to two men imprisoned for crimes they did not commit, marking the first time a 2016 wrongful conviction compensation law has been used in the state. State Sen. Karl Rhoads, chair of the judiciary committee, stated that the current law states that if you are deemed to be actually innocent or found to be found to have been found innocent, you should receive $50,000 per year for every year spent in prison. However, the Attorney General’s office offered far less than the million. The compensation does not adequately reflect the true cost of wrongful imprisonment, according to Ken Lawson of the Hawaii Innocence Project.
