Kiyoshi Kurosawa has released his 45-minute psychological thriller, Chime, which is set to be released in the U.S. alongside his 1998 lo-fi landmark Serpent's Path. The film follows the story of a middle-aged culinary teacher, Matsuoka, who experiences violent tendencies from a ringing sound that he believes can trigger violent behavior. The director's focus is on the unpredictable behavior of his students, Tashiro, who claims to hear a strange ringing sound. Despite this ambiguity, Kuro's filmmaking is observational and deliberate, with a camera guiding entranced protagonists towards pre-ordained outcomes. Chime is said to be a sequel to Kuro's 1997 mind-trip Cure, where he navigates through a series of seemingly motivation-less murders.
