Delaware moves on school funding overhaul as education advocates show impatience

The legislation to overhaul Delaware's public school funding system has cleared its first committee, but civil rights leaders are considering suing the state again if it isn't made progress towards providing disadvantaged students with more resources. The American Civil Liberties Union of Delaware has warned of potential litigation due to years of inaction and alleged constitutional violations suffered by multilingual learners. The ACLU of Delaware sued the state in 2018 alleging it was underfunding these groups, settling in 2020. A 2023 report by the American Institutes of Research found that Delaware needed to add $600 million to $1 billion to achieve educational equity for disadvantaged students.
