The 30-day car insurance rule in Michigan has been causing confusion among college parents and snowbirds. Parents with children attending college outside Michigan, along with snowbirds, are reaching out for answers. One Metro Detroit dad, who has a child in North Carolina and is transferring to Pennsylvania, found out that if they are out of state for more than 30 days, they need to register and insure their vehicle in another state. The Insurance Alliance of Michigan advises that each insurance company may handle the situation differently, with a college student still legally domiciled at their parents' house to remain on their parents’ insurance. Other states may also have different insurance requirements.
