The Department of Homeland Security's internal watchdog has halted an ongoing audit of no-bid contracts due to the ongoing government shutdown. This includes reviews of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities and instances of excessive force in immigration enforcement. Other DHS inspector general reviews include four inquiries into the Secret Service's response to the July 2024 assassination attempt of President Donald Trump, ICE’s progress in finding and checking on the safety of immigrant children who entered the United States unaccompanied. Overall, around 85% of the DHS Inspector General audits are on hold. The partial government shutdown, which has halted funding to the agency, is entering its eighth week and is expected to last longer. The DHS inspector General's office has stated it will utilise any resources available to provide independent oversight of DHS programs and operations.
