Cinema United CEO, Michael O'Leary, has warned of the potential concentration of market power in the hands of smaller distributors like Paramount and Warner Bros. The warning came at CinemaCon, the biggest annual gathering of theater owners. O'Malley stated that consolidation will result in fewer films being produced for movie theatres and significant job losses. The group has been lobbying with regulators, lawmakers and state AGs to prevent this. Hollywood figures including JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, David Fincher and Denis Villeneuve have signed an open letter opposing the proposed merger. Despite this, O’Leary noted that there has been positive movement on theatrical windows, although not enough. He also noted that Gen Z is setting the pace of moviegoing, with frequency among the 12-to-28 year old set rising 25% in one year.
