The Portland City Council has spent 90 minutes listening to additional testimony on a potential foie gras ban, which already failed in committee. The proposed ordinance would impose $5,000 fines on restaurants selling the luxury French ingredient. Councilor Mitch Green and Council President Jamie Dunphy have previously argued that the city can simultaneously address animal welfare while revitalizing the city. The ban was introduced in January and has been met with criticism for being difficult to enforce. Supporters and opponents agree that it is only produced domestically at two American farms and is served at fewer than a dozen local restaurants.
