The technology industry is shifting from training agents to using software like humans' methods to building software for agents, potentially leading to a shift in tech competition over who controls the APIs, data and permissions agents need to act. This shift is already playing out, with companies like Zapier and Salesforce already offering services directly to agents. Other companies like Anthropic and Mesa have already introduced versions of their file systems for agents and payment rails for agentic shopping. The shift could shift tech competition from who has the best interface to who controls how agents interact with software. If we don't build a new layer of software built for agents we may just design and build it without us, AI might just design itself without us.
