Albuquerque city councilors have voted down a proposal to restrict cannabis and nicotine retailers by expanding buffer zones between shops. The measure failed on a vote of 6-3, with Councilors Dan Champine, Dan Lewis, Tammy Fiebelkorn, Klarissa Peña, Nichole Rogers and Stephanie Telles voting against the bill. The proposal would have changed the Integrated Development Ordinance, the city’s master zoning code, by allowing new cannabis or nicotine retailers to set up shop within 990 feet of each another. However, existing legally permitted businesses would have been exempt from this rule. The bill also created a larger buffer zone around schools and daycares and required all cannabis and smoke shops to close between 11pm and 7 a.m.
