Deb Haaland, one of three Democrats vying for the nomination in New Mexico's gubernatorial race, has promised significant changes to the state's health care system. Her plan includes protecting Medicaid, recruiting and retaining providers, bolstering rural health care, combating private equity, reducing prescription drug costs, expanding insurance coverage. Haalland, who served as the U.S. secretary of the interior under former President Joe Biden, also said she would invest in the state’s Medicaid Trust Fund to prevent federal cuts to the program. She also supports making state subsidies for Affordable Care Act premiums permanent and working towards a public, single-payer health insurance option for New Mexicans. To reduce coverage gaps in rural areas, she would support adding residency slots for rural, tribal and underserved communities at the University of New Mexico medical school and expanding mobile clinics and telehealth programs.
