California's current governor, Gavin Newsom, and Xavier Becerra have all pledged to fight for single-payer health care in their campaigns for the 2026 election. The proposal, known as CalCare, was previously supported by Newsom but stalled without sufficient legislative support. A spokesperson for Porter stated that she has consistently supported singlepayer, citing recent posts where she called it the only way to guarantee high-quality care for all Californians. Meanwhile, Steyer, who previously opposed such a policy, changed his mind last year and has pledged to pursue it further. If adopted, CalCare would establish a universal, no-cost health care system for residents.
