Demolition is underway at Gas Works Park in Seattle to remove ladders and platforms from the historic gas towers. This comes after three people have died falling from the towers since 2008, with some seriously injured. The city's Landmarks Preservation Board had previously rejected plans to remove the pedestrian access points, but the Department of Construction and Inspections overruled this earlier this year. The department's order requires the safety issues to be resolved by May 15. The removal of catwalks and ladders from the lower parts of the gasification towers, along with some piping extending outside a perimeter fence, will remain.
