Women's History Month is marking the end of March, with a list of five women who have impacted San Diego's history. Dr. Charlotte Baker was San Diego’s first female doctor and a leader in the suffragette movement, delivering over 1,000 babies without ever losing a mother during childbirth. She led the way for pasteurization laws and the germ theory of diseases, helped establish the San Diego Zoo, led the building of Balboa Park's Children's Home, and co-founded the YMCA. Belle Benchley was the first female zoo director in the world and helped bring the first gorillas, Mbongo and Nagagi, to the zoo in 1931. Jeer Dilno was a pioneer in San Diego and later became Executive Director of the Center, where she helped organize the largest San Diego Pride march in 1975. Toni Atkins was elected to the state Senate in 1985 and became the first openly gay state Senate and first openly elected person to serve as mayor in 2010.
