The article discusses the state standards for social studies education, stating that not all state standards are created equal, with some comprehensive with explicit language, while others minimize certain areas of study. The article also notes that 39 states have generally adopted the National Council for the Social Studies’ College, Career, and Civic Life Framework for Social Studies State Standards, which aligns with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies. However, a few states, including Florida, have refused to adopt this framework. Florida's State Academic Standards Social Studies 2025 is considered the gold standard for social science education, emphasizing American history, African American history and AfricanAmerican history, civics and government, geography and economics, and introducing concepts such as financial literacy in middle school. The National Association of Scholars warns that this framework substitutes for content, yokes social studies instruction to the failed Common Core standards, and politicizes social studies curricula based on these standards. The author suggests that Florida's focus on civics education should be on the philosophy of Thomas Jefferson, who envisioned an informed citizenry and a virtuous people who would uphold the American republic for generations.
